"The irrepressible Bill Schilling was our instructor.  For those of
you who know Bill, you'll know what I mean when I say Bill's feeling
for the music is infectious.  His love of the folk genre and of the
autoharp was immediately apparent and made it that much easier to
learn.... I couldn't have imagined a more comprehensive class or a better
setting in which to hold it."
Rick M of Maryland on Spring 2005 Beginning Autoharp Workshop as posted on cyberpluckers

April 17 - 19, 2009:  Weekend Advanced Beginning Autoharp Workshop
Level: Beginning
Tuition: $120
Course Times: Friday 7 - 9 PM; Saturday 9:30 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 - 3:30 PM; Sunday 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Course Description:
The purpose of this workshop is to help participants understand how to find melodies for playing leads on the autoharp. Participants will be encouraged and instructed on playing by ear and on playing by finding the notes from written music and tablature as we understand how our chord bars are related to the notes of the scale and how small movements of the right hand can bring out the melody. We will try several styles of lead playing including melody strum, thumb lead, pinch/pluck, and patting always working from easy two chord or three chord tunes and songs (to simplify left hand chord bar fingerings while concentrating on finding the melody notes with the right hand) to tunes and songs with more chord bar changes. Bill will try to hold back from singing the songs or the chord changes all of the time so that we can concentrate on hearing the sounds from the autoharps.

May 15 - 17, 2009:  Weekend Beginning Mountain Dulcimer Workshop
Level: Beginning
Tuition: $120
Course Times: Friday 7 - 9 PM; Saturday 9:30 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 - 3:30 PM; Sunday 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Course Description:
Our major concerns in this course will be melody playing along with drones as well as playing chord backup. We will work with DAA and DAD tunings and find out how these can work together. We will also try DAC tuning to find out about playing in minor modes. Tuning tips and helpful hints will be covered. We will use tab and written music and play by ear. As time allows, students will hear and may try harmony playing techniques and melody chord style playing. Some loaner mountain dulcimers will be available.

September 11 - 13, 2009:  Weekend Beginning Hammered Dulcimer Workshop
Level: Beginning
Tuition: $120
Course Times: Friday 7 - 9 PM; Saturday 9:30 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 - 3:30 PM; Sunday 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Course Description: Using several common jam and club tunes, we'll start with simple melody playing and do a lot of work with chords as one of the best options for adding interest to playing whether for accompaniment or embellishment. Tuning tips and care tips will help get the most from instruments and hammers. We will focus on playing from written music and/or by ear depending on the needs of the students. A variety of hammering techniques and patterns will give students ideas about ways to proceed as they become more familiar with their instruments. Loaner hammered dulcimers are available.

October 2-4,2009:  Weekend Beginning/Advanced Beginning Autoharp Workshop
Level: Beginning/Advanced Beginning
Tuition: $120
Course Times: Friday 7 - 9 PM; Saturday 9:30 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 - 3:30 PM; Sunday 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Course Description: This course will center on becoming comfortable with your autoharp from finding the best position for holding your autoharp to becoming acquainted with your chord bar setup (and maybe learning if another setup can easily be done which will work better for you) to learning left hand techniques so that you will not have to look at your chord bars to learning various strum and picking patterns. We will mostly work on accompaniment styles for playing with your own singing, with the singing of others, or with other melody instruments, but we will also try some melody playing with the melody strum and be exposed to other melody playing styles. Written music with chords and melody chords will be available, but we will also work on playing by ear. Tuning and instrument care techniques will be covered. Some loaner autoharps will be available.

October 23 - 25 , 2009:  Weekend Beginning/Advanced Beginning Mountain Dulcimer Workshop
Level: Beginning
Tuition: $120
Course Times: Friday 7 - 9 PM; Saturday 9:30 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 - 3:30 PM; Sunday 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Course Description:
Our major concerns in this course for beginners will be melody playing along with drones as well as playing chord backup and for advanced beginners will be melody chord style playing and harmony playing techniques. Both groups will use the same repertoire so that we can play individually and together to ear the differences in the styles while realizing that they can work together. We will work with both DAA and DAD tunings. We will also try DAC tuning to find out about playing in minor modes. Tuning tips and helpful hints will be covered. We will use tab and written music and play by ear. Some loaner mountain dulcimers will be available.

Bill Schilling has been singing and playing various folk instruments for over 40 years. He has performed for audiences of all ages in many settings from coast to coast; has led workshops around the northeast and has taught a week-long beginning autoharp workshop at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. He is the founder of the Salem, Ohio Dulci-More Folk and Traditional Musicians, and the Dulci-More Folk Festival. Bill is the music director for Sheepfest at Weatherbury Farm and Folk Music on the Farm.

Bill plays 6 and 12 string guitars, autoharp, hammered and fretted dulcimers, bowed psalteries, banjo guitar, National steel guitar, ukuleles, recorders, digital horn, jug, and an assortment of inexpensive or homemade instruments. His large repertoire of songs includes old favorites or more recent ones by some of today's singer-songwriters; many to bring a laugh or some to bring a tear to the listener; ones with special emphasis for particular audiences; or the occasional original.

Bill's concerts become complete as he  talks about instruments, songwriters, locations, and other related information on the songs; or tells stories about the songs, his personal experiences and many other subjects. Most of Bill's engagements are for concerts, and he has performed them in a wide variety of settings all across the country

Bill Schilling and Linda Sigismondi have a CD,  "Songs from Canal Days";  Bill also has six books available presently.
